I discovered a little stat recently that has put a little jump in my step. Canada has hosted the Olympics 3 times in history.  The previous 2 times the Olympic committee has chosen a Canadian city, the host city has gone on to win the Stanley Cup the following NHL hockey season.

In 1976 Canada hosted the Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec.  The following NHL season the Montreal Canadiens won their 20th Stanley Cup. They set an NHL record for most points in a season by a team with 132 points. This would have won them the President’s Trophy that year had it existed at the time (It was introduced in the 85-86 season).

Montreal

In 1988 Canada hosted the Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. The Flames beat out the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings, and the Chicago Blackhawks on route to winning the Cup against the Montreal Canadiens. The Calgary Flames were also the first relocated NHL team (from Atlanta in 1980-81) to win the Stanley Cup.

Forward to 2010, Canada hosts the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Team Canada goes on to win the Gold Medal in Ice Hockey, with the Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo in the pipes. Vancouver Canucks clinch the President’s trophy with 117 regular season points, a club record. The Canucks dispatch the Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, and the San Jose sharks on their way to their first Stanley Cup final in 17 years.

What happens next?

History will be made.
